PM Modi Launches Bima Sakhi Yojana: A Historic Step for Insurance Inclusion

In a landmark move aimed at deepening financial inclusion and empowering rural women, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the Bima Sakhi Yojana a transformative initiative designed to expand the reach of insurance services to the last mile of India’s villages. Described as a historic step by Union Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the scheme blends the goals of economic security, gender equality, and grassroots employment into one powerful mission.

What is Bima Sakhi Yojana?

The Bima Sakhi Yojana is an innovative program under the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM) that will deploy trained women from Self-Help Groups (SHGs) as “Bima Sakhis” at the Gram Panchayat level. These women will serve as insurance facilitators in rural and semi-urban regions, providing access to government-backed and private insurance schemes to underserved communities.

This effort is a significant move towards the Government of India’s broader mission of “Insurance for All by 2047.”

A Multi-Dimensional Empowerment Drive

According to Shri Chouhan, this scheme is more than just an insurance program — it’s a pathway to financial independence and entrepreneurship for rural women. By offering income-generating opportunities, Bima Sakhi Yojana also supports:

  • SDG Goal 5 – Gender Equality
  • The Lakhpati Didi Initiative – Aiming to create 2 crore self-reliant women entrepreneurs by August 15
  • Employment Generation – Particularly in rural and semi-urban areas
  • Disaster Resilience – Acting as a financial shield for families in vulnerable areas

LIC Partnership for National Impact

A crucial element of the scheme is the partnership between the Ministry of Rural Development and the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC). LIC will assist in training Bima Sakhis and help bring more citizens under formal insurance coverage — all while building trust-based delivery mechanisms tailored to rural needs.

Boosting India’s Financial Ecosystem from Below

The Bima Sakhi Yojana is deeply aligned with flagship government programs such as:

  • Jan Dhan Se Jan Suraksha
  • Digital India
  • Women Skill Development Missions

It promises to bridge the gap between financial services and rural households, bringing digital and formal financial tools to communities that need them the most.

Why This Launch is Truly Historic

Never before has the Indian insurance sector witnessed a community-led movement like this. By giving village women the tools, training, and trust to serve their own communities, the Bima Sakhi Yojana is not just ensuring insurance coverage — it is creating changemakers.

As Shri Chouhan rightly said,

“Bima Sakhis are not just insurance agents, they are pioneers of social change.”

A Call to Action

In his address, Shri Chouhan called upon state governments and partner organizations to join hands in this mission. The goal is clear: to take Bima Sakhi Yojana to every village and every household across the nation.

The launch of the Bima Sakhi Yojana marks a pivotal moment in India’s journey toward inclusive growth. With rural women at the helm, this scheme stands to revolutionize insurance access, promote financial empowerment, and contribute meaningfully to building an Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
